It is neither possible to buy any
bottles nor much less taste them, but Helen and Orlando will open up their wine cellar exclusively to their guests with
great pleasure and enthusiasm.
Among the many beauties of Siena, there are others a great deal
more fascinating as they are unknown: the cellars which are found under the most prestigious palaces of the city.
It has only been during the last few years that renovation of these places has begun, nevertheless, they remain in the hands
of private owners and so are inaccessible to visitors and tourists alike. One of these suggestive cellars is that of Helen and
Orlando which is located in Banchi di Sotto, or rather the road that runs parallel to Piazza del Campo.
Upon entering, one is struck by the overwhelming presence of a brick well decorated around the top edge in white marble,
orginally used for collecting rainwater.
The rainwater well rests up against a stone wall, officially dating back to the year
1000 A.D., according to the Superintendant of Monuments, and was once part of the base of a tower which no longer exists.
